A dystopian vision of Jacques Hétu's Quatuor À Cordes No 2 Opus 50
Commissioned by the OSD, Drummondville 2048 imagines a future where classical music is performed by highly expressive robots — and where emotion persists even when humanity’s role in culture evolves.
In early 2023, the Orchestre Symphonique de Drummondville invited Above The Void to create visuals for a new interpretation of Jacques Hétu’s Quatuor à cordes n°2, op. 50. We filmed the quartet against a green screen, then transformed each musician into a mechanical performer through advanced AI-assisted workflows.
Every shot underwent a detailed compositing process involving multiple layers of stylization. Using WarpFusion, the human performances were reinterpreted as robotic choreography — maintaining authentic musical gestures while shifting their physical identity into a speculative future.
The piece remains rooted in the vibrancy and precision of Hétu’s composition — but reframed as a concert in Drummondville, 2048.
